The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 are both book-style foldables, but they make different trade-offs. The Fold7 gives you the bigger 8-inch inner screen and the larger 6.5-inch cover screen, with more of its specifications confirmed. The Fold8 is lighter at 201 g, has a bigger battery on paper and faster charging claims, but a smaller inner screen and several details that are not confirmed.

The picks below are based on official specifications and published reviews summarised in our individual reviews, not hands-on testing. Prices and availability on Amazon.in change, so we quote no prices here.

A variant warning applies to both. The Fold7 listing title does not state colour, RAM or storage, and Samsung India lists several combinations. The Fold8 listing we reviewed is the Graphite 12GB RAM and 256GB model; other colours and the 512GB and 1TB versions are separate listings. Check the variant on the listing before you order.

Quick verdict: Fold7 or Fold8?

  • Choose the Galaxy Z Fold7 if you want the larger 8-inch inner display, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a 3x telephoto camera and a spec sheet where IP48 and the update promise are listed by a published source
  • Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 if a lighter 201 g body matters most, you want a bigger reported battery and faster reported charging, and you can live with details that are not confirmed
  • Skip both if you need an S Pen, a small pocketable flip phone or a confirmed charger in the box
  • Wait and check first if you need the Fold8’s IP rating, glass type, S Pen support or update period confirmed, because the sources we used do not state them

Galaxy Z Fold7 vs Fold8: specifications side by side

Where our reviews say a spec is unconfirmed, the table says so rather than guessing. Note that the two reviews drew on different sources, so some Fold8 figures come from a single published review.

Screens and design: bigger versus lighter

The Fold7’s main screen is 8 inches at 1968 x 2184 with a peak of 2600 nits, though GSMArena measured a maximum of 1408 nits, so the higher figure is a short peak and not what you should expect across a full white screen outdoors. Its cover screen is a 6.5-inch 21:9 panel that is comfortable for one-handed typing. At 215 g and 8.9 mm folded, it is thin for the screen size.

The Fold8 steps back on screen size: a roughly 7.6-inch 4:3 inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. In return it weighs 201 g, which Samsung calls its lightest Fold yet. Shortlist says the crease has practically vanished and the inner display is more durable, but that is one review and the manufacturer’s claim, not a measured durability test. Its 4:3 shape reduces letterboxing on video and suits documents. Samsung’s page does not give the Fold8’s resolution, brightness or panel type, so we do not state them.

Who it suits: pick the Fold7 if you want the largest canvas and a roomier cover screen. Pick the Fold8 if weight in the pocket and in the hand matters more than screen size.

Performance and memory

The Fold7 uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy with 12GB or 16GB RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. Samsung claims 38% faster CPU, 26% better graphics and 41% faster NPU compared with the Fold6, which are Samsung’s own figures. GSMArena’s lab page says gaming and call endurance improved over the predecessor.

The Fold8 uses the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. Shortlist calls it plenty powerful for demanding games. We have no benchmarks for either phone in our sources, so we cannot say how much faster the Fold8 is in practice. Keep in mind that the 12GB and 256GB Fold8 listing does not get the 16GB RAM, which Samsung pairs with the 1TB model.

Who it suits: both are flagship-class for multitasking and games. Neither review gives us grounds to pick a winner on speed.

Cameras

The Fold7 has a 200MP main camera with OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and GSMArena lists video up to 8K at 30fps. The Fold8 has a 50MP wide and a 50MP ultra-wide pair. Shortlist notes its main camera trails the 200MP one on the Fold8 Ultra, and our Fold8 review could not verify telephoto or zoom capability, nor the selfie camera specification.

We have no camera test for either phone, so we cannot rate image quality. What can be said is that the Fold7 has a confirmed 3x telephoto and a higher-resolution main sensor, while the Fold8’s zoom ability is unconfirmed.

Who it suits: if zoom and a high-resolution main camera matter, the Fold7 is the safer choice on the available evidence.

Battery and charging

On paper the Fold8 has the edge: 4,800mAh and up to 45W wired and 20W wireless charging per Shortlist, against 4400mAh and 25W wired with 15W wireless on the Fold7. Treat the Fold8 figures carefully, since Samsung’s page did not list battery or charging figures and Shortlist’s all-day verdict is one reviewer’s impression.

For the Fold7, GSMArena recorded an Active Use Score of 11 hours 44 minutes on the main display and about 12 hours 56 minutes on the cover screen, calling the main-display result slightly below average. It charged to about 28% in 15 minutes and 53% in 30 minutes, and took 1 hour 27 minutes for a full charge. GSMArena calls this one of the slowest in its category. We have no independent test data for the Fold8.

Both reviews flag the box. Samsung India’s list for the Fold7 shows a cable and no charger, and the Fold8’s box contents are not confirmed, so budget for a suitable charger.

Who it suits: if charging speed and battery size are priorities, the Fold8 looks better on paper. If you want measured results, only the Fold7 has them.

Durability, software and what is not confirmed

The Fold7 has IP48 per GSMArena, which covers immersion but gives limited dust protection, and Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the cover screen. It ships with One UI 8, and GSMArena lists up to 7 major OS updates, though Samsung India’s page did not state an update policy. S Pen is not supported.

For the Fold8, the IP rating, glass type, S Pen support and update period were not stated on the pages we read. Samsung’s Flip8 page promises up to seven OS upgrades, but we will not assume the same for the Fold8. Confirm these on the listing and Samsung’s full tech specs before you buy.

Who it suits: buyers who need water resistance or an update promise on paper before spending flagship money should lean to the Fold7.
