Is the Apple iPhone 17 a good buy? On paper, yes: it has a 6.3-inch OLED that goes up to 120Hz, plus an A19 chip, 256GB as the starting capacity on Apple India and a 48MP Fusion main camera. It suits people who want one capable, all-round iPhone and do not need the extra zoom of the Pro models. Its main limits are 2x maximum optical-quality zoom and a USB 2 speed on the USB-C port.
This article is based on Apple’s official India specifications and published reviews, chiefly Digit, checked on 29 October 2026. It is not based on hands-on testing, and it carries no prices because they change. The link on this page takes you to the current Amazon.in listing.
The listing we link to is titled “Apple iPhone 17 256 GB: 15.93 cm (6.3″)”. That confirms 256GB and the 6.3-inch size, but not the colour, so check the colour shown on the listing. Apple India lists Black, White, Mist Blue, Sage and Lavender, with storage of 256GB or 512GB.

Design and durability
The iPhone 17 weighs 177 g and measures 149.6 x 71.5 x 7.95 mm, so it is a little taller and heavier than the iPhone 16 because of the bigger screen. Apple lists an aluminium design with a Ceramic Shield 2 front, and a colour-infused glass back on the non-White models. It has both an Action button and Camera Control, and it is rated IP68 for up to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes, a rating Apple says can decrease with wear.
In practice, the IP68 rating means the phone should survive rain and accidental splashes. It does not turn the phone into a diving camera, and liquid damage is normally not covered by a standard warranty.
Display: the 120Hz upgrade
This is the headline change. Apple lists a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display at 2622 x 1206 pixels (460 ppi) with ProMotion, adaptive up to 120Hz, and an Always-On display. Brightness is quoted at 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits for HDR and up to 3,000 nits outdoors. Digit describes it as a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED, the same panel it says the iPhone 17 Pro uses, and notes that the Always-On display is now on the base model.
Why does this matter? A 120Hz screen makes scrolling, animations and games look smoother, and an adaptive panel can drop its refresh rate to save power. Digit measured a peak of 1820 nits in auto mode in daylight, and also says outdoor visibility under harsh sunlight takes a hit and that high brightness draws a lot of battery. So the 3,000-nit figure is Apple’s peak claim, not what you will see all day.
Performance: A19 chip
The A19 chip has a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a 16-core Neural Engine, and Apple mentions hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Apple does not state RAM. Digit reports an AnTuTu score of over 2.1 million points and says the phone beat the iPhone 16 Pro, Galaxy S25 and Pixel 10 in its tests. That is a single reviewer’s benchmark, so treat it as an indicator, not a guarantee of real-world difference.
Digit also says the phone still gets warm during benchmarks or camera use, calls the heating moderate under heavy load, and notes that BGMI is capped at 60 FPS. For everyday apps, social media, video and photography, the A19 should be more than enough. Heavy gamers should think about whether the heat matters to them.
Cameras
There are two rear cameras and the page lists both as 48MP: a Fusion Main (26 mm, f/1.6, sensor-shift OIS) and an Ultra Wide (13 mm, f/2.2, 120 degree field of view). Apple lists a 2x option with a 4x optical range and digital zoom up to 10x. Digit notes that the telephoto stays at 2x and says it wishes for more than just 2x telephoto zoom.
Digit found photos from the main sensor more vibrant, natural and detailed than the iPhone 16’s, with less grain in low light, and highlights the upgraded 48MP ultra wide. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage unit with autofocus and Retina Flash, and Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60 fps on both the front and rear cameras. For selfie and video-call use, that is a clear step up over many phones at this size.
Battery and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 17 at up to 30 hours of video playback and up to 27 hours of streamed video. Digit lists a 3,692 mAh battery and says looping a Full HD+ video lasted about 22 hours in its test. It estimates 6 to 7 hours of moderate-to-heavy screen time when charged to 80%. Digit also notes that Low Battery mode can extend runtime at the cost of the Always-On display and 120Hz. Notice the gap between Apple’s figure and the reviewer’s loop: use Digit’s number as a more cautious guide.
On charging, Apple says up to 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W or higher adapter, and MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W. The adapter is sold separately, because Apple lists only the cable in the box. Digit’s page does not discuss charging speed, so we cannot offer an independent figure.
Connectivity and software
Apple lists 5G (sub-6 GHz), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, NFC, an Apple N1 wireless chip and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. Dual-frequency GPS includes NavIC, which is relevant in India. The SIM arrangement is nano-SIM plus eSIM, with dual eSIM support. The USB-C port supports charging and DisplayPort but only USB 2 speeds of up to 480 Mbps, a point Digit also criticises because Pro models get faster USB 3 speeds.
Digit gives mixed notes on software, saying Apple Intelligence is less accurate than Google Gemini and Samsung Galaxy AI in its view, and that the spatial wallpaper drains battery and sometimes stops working. Software features and versions change quickly, so check Apple’s own pages for the current iOS version and feature availability in India.
Who should buy it
- People upgrading from an iPhone 12, 13 or 14 who want a bigger, smoother screen and better cameras
- Buyers who do not need a Pro model but want 120Hz and an Always-On display
- Content creators who mostly shoot on the main and ultra wide cameras and use the front camera for vlogs
- Anyone who wants 256GB to start with, instead of 128GB
Who should skip it
- Photographers who want long optical zoom, since the zoom stops at 2x
- Users who move large video files by cable and want USB 3 speeds
- Anyone who prefers a smaller, lighter phone, since the iPhone 17 is 177 g with a 6.3-inch display
- Buyers who do not mind a 60Hz screen and want to spend less, who may be happy with an older or smaller model
Alternatives worth comparing
Apple iPhone 16. Per Apple, it has the A18 chip and a 6.1-inch OLED, and GSMArena notes it keeps a 60Hz refresh rate. It is smaller and lighter at 170 g, but its Apple-rated video playback is up to 22 hours against the iPhone 17’s 30 hours.
Apple iPhone 17e. Apple lists the A19 chip, a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, a 48MP Fusion main camera and up to 26 hours of video playback. It is the smaller, newer-chip option if you do not need the 6.3-inch screen.

Buying tips before you order
- Check storage and colour. The listing title names 256GB and the 6.3-inch size but not the colour. Apple also sells a 512GB version, which is a different listing.
- Budget for a charger. Apple lists only the cable in the box. For the quoted 50% in 20 minutes, you need a 40W or higher adapter.
- Check the seller and invoice. Make sure the phone is sold with a valid GST invoice and confirm warranty terms on Apple’s India support pages.
- Accessories. MagSafe chargers, cases and screen guards are sold separately.
- Backups. Set up iCloud or another backup before switching, and decide whether you want a physical SIM, an eSIM or both.
