Is the Frontech 2251 USB webcam worth buying? Only if you need the most basic plug-in camera for occasional video calls or online classes on a desktop PC that has no camera at all. It records at 480p, which is standard definition, so despite the “HD” in its Amazon title it will look softer than the 720p or 1080p cameras built into many recent laptops.

The Amazon.in listing describes a black USB webcam with a built-in microphone, an LED light, 30 fps video, auto white balance and plug-and-play setup. It is pitched at video calls, online classes and streaming on a laptop, PC or TV.

A note on how this article was written: it is based on the Amazon.in listing data captured on 17 October 2026 and on a small number of published retailer and driver listings. It is not a hands-on review, and we have not tested the Frontech 2251. We also could not find a product page for the 2251 on Frontech’s official website on 17 October 2026, so some details below are clearly labelled as seller or retailer claims.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: a desktop PC without a camera, occasional Google Meet or Zoom calls, school or college online classes, and a low-stakes backup camera
  • Skip if: you present to clients, record YouTube or Instagram videos, stream on Twitch, or already have a laptop with a working 720p or better webcam
  • Key strengths: simple USB plug-and-play setup (per the listing), built-in microphone, LED light, small and light at 55 g (listing figure)
  • Key limitations: 480p resolution, manual focus, no official Frontech product page found, and several listing specs that do not make sense for a webcam

What 480p actually means for your video calls

A 480p webcam captures images about 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels tall, which is roughly 0.3 megapixels. A 720p camera captures 1280 x 720 (about 0.9 megapixels) and a 1080p camera captures 1920 x 1080 (about 2 megapixels). In other words, a 720p webcam has about three times as many pixels as a 480p one, and a 1080p webcam about six to seven times as many.

In practice, this matters less than you might think on a small video tile in a group call, where your image is shrunk anyway. It matters much more when someone views you full screen, when you hold a document up to the Frontech 2251, or when you record a video for later. At 480p, fine text, facial detail and hair will look soft.

The 4:3 shape of 640 x 480 is also narrower than the 16:9 widescreen image most video apps use, so your picture may be cropped or shown with bars on the sides, depending on the app.

The word “HD” in the listing title is misleading. In common usage, HD starts at 720p, and 480p is standard definition. Buy the Frontech 2251 knowing that it is an SD webcam.

Listing specs that do not add up

The Amazon.in technical table for this product includes several entries that are hard to reconcile with a small USB webcam. We have left them out of our specification table and recommend you do not base a purchase on them:

  • “Optical Zoom 3x” and “Lens Type: Zoom” (the same listing also says manual focus and gives a 55 g weight, and no zoom control is described)
  • “Photo Sensor Size: 35mm” (a full-frame camera sensor size, not a webcam sensor)
  • “Flash Memory Type: SD” with speed classes (no memory card slot is mentioned anywhere else)
  • “Operating System: android” (the title targets laptops, PCs and TVs)
  • “Image stabilisation: digital” and a colour of “Black, Silver”, while the title says black

These look like template or data-entry errors on the listing. If any of them matter to you, ask the seller through the listing’s questions section before ordering.

Microphone, light and focus

Microphone: the listing says the Frontech 2251 has a built-in microphone, but it gives no detail on pickup range or noise reduction. A webcam microphone sits further from your mouth than a headset microphone, so it will pick up more room noise. For classes and casual calls in a quiet room it can be enough. For meetings in a noisy home, a wired headset or earphones with a mic will usually sound clearer.

LED light: the listing mentions an LED light. It does not say how bright it is or whether it can be switched off. A small light on a webcam can help a little in a dim room, but it is no replacement for a lamp or a window in front of you.

Manual focus: both the Amazon.in listing and Moglix list manual focus. This means the Frontech 2251 does not refocus by itself as you move. You set the focus once for your usual sitting distance, and it stays there. That is fine if you sit in the same spot every day, but less convenient if you move between a desk and a sofa, or hold objects up to the camera.

Auto white balance: the listing and Moglix both mention automatic white balance, which adjusts colours so that skin tones look less yellow under warm bulbs or less blue under tube lights.

Getting the best image from a basic webcam

A low-resolution camera benefits more than an expensive one from good conditions. These steps cost nothing or very little:

  • Light your face from the front. Sit facing a window or place a lamp behind your screen. Avoid a bright window behind you, which turns your face into a silhouette.
  • Set the focus at your normal distance. Open the Windows Camera app or your video app’s preview, sit where you normally sit and adjust the focus until your eyes look sharpest.
  • Place the camera at eye level. Mount it on top of the monitor or raise the laptop on a stand so the camera is not looking up at your chin.
  • Select it in your app. In Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, choose the Frontech camera and microphone in the audio and video settings, as apps may default to another device.
  • Cover it when not in use. The listing does not mention a privacy shutter, so a small sliding cover or simply unplugging it is a sensible habit.

If your room is dim, a basic ring light is the cheapest upgrade for any webcam. Our Amazon Basics 10-inch ring light review explains what a starter light can and cannot do.

Compatibility: PC, laptop and TV

The listing says the Frontech 2251 is plug and play and needs no extra drivers or software. A driver listing on OEMDrivers for the “Frontech E-Cam FT-2251” lists Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista and XP, and describes a USB 2.0 Type-A connection. That page also offers a driver whose file name refers to a different model number (FT-2249), so treat it with caution and try the plug-and-play route first.

The listing does not mention macOS or Chromebook support. Many basic USB webcams follow a standard that works on several operating systems without drivers, but we could not confirm that for this model, so test it promptly after delivery if you use a Mac or Chromebook.

The title also mentions TV use. A TV can generally use a USB camera only if a video calling app on that TV supports external cameras. Check your TV’s manual or the app’s help page before buying the 2251 for a TV.

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Who should buy the Frontech 2251
Who the Frontech 2251 suits, summarised from this review.

Consider the Frontech 2251 if you have a desktop PC with no camera and need something for school classes, family video calls or occasional interviews, and you accept standard-definition quality.

Skip it if your laptop’s built-in camera already works, if you appear in client meetings where image quality reflects on you, if you create content for YouTube or Instagram, or if you want a webcam with autofocus, a privacy shutter or clearly documented specifications.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Logitech C270: Logitech India lists 720p video at 30 fps, a mono noise-reducing microphone rated for pickup up to 1.5 metres, a 55-degree diagonal field of view, RightLight 2 automatic light correction and a universal clip.
  • Logitech C310: also 720p at 30 fps with RightLight 2 and a mono noise-reducing microphone rated up to 1.5 metres, but with a wider 60-degree diagonal field of view, according to Logitech India.
  • Your laptop’s built-in camera: if you mainly use a laptop, check its camera resolution in its spec sheet first, since many recent laptops include a 720p or 1080p webcam that will already look sharper than a 480p external one.

What to check before you order

Frontech 2251 buying checklist
What to check before you buy the Frontech 2251.
  • Confirm the listing title says Frontech 2251 and 480P, and that the colour is black.
  • Check that your computer has a free USB Type-A port, or plan for a USB-C adapter.
  • Read the questions section for answers on Mac, Chromebook or TV compatibility if you need them.
  • Ask the seller about warranty, since the listing data we reviewed does not state the warranty period or service process.
  • Keep your invoice and test the camera and microphone soon after delivery, within the return window.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Frontech 2251 an HD webcam?

No. Its resolution is 480p, which is standard definition. HD generally starts at 720p. The word “HD” appears in the Amazon.in title, but the listing’s own specification says 480p.

Does the Frontech 2251 need a driver?

The Amazon.in listing says it is plug and play with no extra drivers or software needed. A driver is listed on OEMDrivers, but it refers to another model number in its file name.

Does it have autofocus?

No. The Amazon.in listing and Moglix both list manual focus, so you set the focus by hand for your usual distance.

Does it have a built-in microphone?

Yes, according to the Amazon.in listing. No pickup range or noise-reduction details are given.

Will it work with a Mac or Chromebook?

The listing does not say. Test it on delivery or ask the seller before ordering if you need it on a Mac or Chromebook.

Bottom line

The Frontech 2251 is a no-frills 480p USB webcam for people who simply need a working camera on a desktop PC. It can handle classes and casual calls, but it is not an HD camera, its focus is manual, and its listing contains several apparent errors. If you care about how you look on camera, a 720p model such as the Logitech C270 or C310 is a more sensible starting point.
