The MSI Thin 15 with the RTX 3050 is a budget 15.6-inch gaming laptop that combines a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU with a Full HD 144Hz screen, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. On Amazon.in it is sold in two near-identical configurations: one with the 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12450H and one with the 13th Gen Core i5-13420H. The short answer: both handle esports titles comfortably and run most current games at 1080p with lowered settings, the 13th Gen model is slightly quicker, and on either one the 45W graphics card, not the processor, sets the gaming ceiling.

This guide is aimed at first-time PC gamers, engineering and design students who need a dedicated NVIDIA GPU, and anyone who wants a 144Hz laptop without paying for an RTX 4050 model. It is based on MSI’s official India specification pages and on published reviews, not on hands-on testing by GadgetSoch. All specifications were checked on 17 October 2026.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: esports and casual 1080p gaming, students who need an NVIDIA GPU, and buyers who want a 144Hz screen on a tight budget
  • Skip if: you want new AAA games at high settings, need colour-accurate editing, or expect long battery life away from a socket
  • Key strengths: 144Hz Full HD panel, 16GB of dual-channel DDR4, a spare 2.5-inch SATA bay, Wi-Fi 6E, Gigabit Ethernet and four USB ports
  • Key limitations: RTX 3050 capped at 45W with 4GB of video memory, a panel 91mobiles lists at 45 percent NTSC, a 52.4Wh battery, HDMI limited to 4K at 30Hz and a single-colour keyboard backlight

Specifications are from MSI India’s pages for the Thin 15 B12UX and B13UX series. Each Amazon link opens one specific configuration: see the MSI Thin 15 with Core i5-12450H and RTX 3050 on Amazon.in, or see the MSI Thin 15 with Core i5-13420H and RTX 3050 on Amazon.in.

12th Gen vs 13th Gen: what actually changes

The two processors are close relatives. Both have eight cores (four performance and four efficient), 12 threads and 12MB of cache. Notebookcheck’s processor comparison describes the Core i5-13420H as a Raptor Lake-H chip that still uses the Alder Lake core design, so its advantage comes mainly from higher clock speeds: up to 4.6GHz on the performance cores against 4.4GHz on the Core i5-12450H. That gap is most likely to show in CPU-heavy jobs such as compiling code or exporting video. In games it should matter much less, because both laptops use the same 45W RTX 3050.

Everything else is shared. MSI India lists the same display, memory, SSD, ports, battery, charger, dimensions and weight for the 12th Gen Thin 15 (B12UC) and the 13th Gen Thin 15 (B13UC-125IN). The only other listed difference is Bluetooth: 5.4 on the B13UC-125IN, and 5.3 or 5.4 on B12UC models depending on the SKU.

How to choose: if the two listings are close in price, take the Core i5-13420H model, since it is a little faster in the same chassis. If the Core i5-12450H model is clearly cheaper on the day you shop, it is the value pick for gaming.

Gaming performance: what a 45W RTX 3050 can and cannot do

MSI lists the RTX 3050 Laptop GPU here with 4GB of GDDR6, a boost clock of up to 1172.5MHz and maximum graphics power of 45W including Dynamic Boost. In its February 2025 report on this laptop, Notebookcheck noted that a 45W limit places this RTX 3050 at the lower end of its possible performance range.

Notebookcheck did not benchmark the Thin 15 itself. It used the older MSI Thin GF63 12UC, which pairs the same Core i5-12450H and RTX 3050, as a reference, recording roughly 40fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Medium and around 34fps at High, about 80fps in The Finals at Medium and about 37fps in Baldur’s Gate 3 at High. Tech Critter, reviewing a Thin 15 B12UC with an i7-12650H and RTX 3050, reported Cyberpunk 2077 staying above roughly 40fps at Low settings with DLSS.

So demanding single-player games are playable at 1080p if you lower settings and use upscaling. The RTX 3050 supports NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution, but DLSS Frame Generation is limited to RTX 40-series and newer GPUs, as PC Gamer has explained. The 4GB of video memory is also tight for some recent releases, where texture quality may need to come down.

Competitive games suit the 144Hz screen better. In 91mobiles’ review of the Thin 15 with the lower-tier RTX 2050, Valorant averaged over 220fps at High settings, so the RTX 3050 versions should have ample headroom for esports at 144Hz.

Display, keyboard and build quality

The 144Hz refresh rate makes fast motion look much smoother than the 60Hz screens common on budget laptops. MSI calls the panel “IPS-level” and does not publish a colour gamut figure. 91mobiles lists it at 45 percent NTSC, calling it good but not outstanding and not ideal for colour-accurate work. It is fine for gaming, coding and browsing, but not for professional photo or video grading. LaptopMedia reported that the panel in the Thin 15 B12U it reviewed does not use PWM flicker.

According to 91mobiles, the keyboard deck and lid are metal while the bottom is plastic, with slight deck flex while typing, and the lid cannot be opened with one hand. The keyboard skips the number pad and has a single-colour blue backlight. 91mobiles liked the key spacing and travel but not the oversized arrow keys, and Tech Critter found the trackpad small but accurate. At 1.86kg and 21.7mm thick, the Thin 15 is reasonably portable for a gaming laptop.

Thermals, battery life and speakers

Expect audible fans when gaming. 91mobiles noted the fans ramp up noticeably under load and temperatures reached 85°C while gaming on the RTX 2050 model it reviewed, listing high thermals among its cons. Keep the vents clear and use a hard surface or cooling pad, especially in Indian summers.

The 52.4Wh battery is modest. In 91mobiles’ PCMark video test the Thin 15 lasted 5 hours and 15 minutes, while Tech Critter estimated 4 to 5 hours of normal use. Gaming on battery cuts both runtime and performance, so keep the 120W adapter connected when you play. The two 2W speakers are fine for videos, but 91mobiles found they can be drowned out in noisy rooms, so a headset is better for gaming.

Upgrades and connectivity

Both configurations ship with 16GB as two 8GB sticks, so memory already runs in dual-channel mode. MSI lists support for up to 64GB, but with both slots filled, upgrading means replacing the modules. The single M.2 slot holds the 512GB PCIe Gen4 SSD, and a 2.5-inch SATA bay takes a second SSD or hard drive, which is useful because modern games fill 512GB quickly.

You get three USB-A ports, a USB-C port with DisplayPort output, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet and separate microphone and headphone jacks. MSI rates the HDMI port at 4K and 30Hz, so it is not ideal for a high-refresh external monitor. MSI’s specification sheet does not list USB-C charging, so plan on using the bundled charger.

Which configuration should you buy, and who should skip both

Who should buy the MSI Thin 15
Who the MSI Thin 15 suits, summarised from this review.
  • Pick the Core i5-13420H model if the price gap is small or you also do CPU-heavy work
  • Pick the Core i5-12450H model if it is clearly cheaper and you mostly game
  • Skip both if you want high settings in new AAA games, need a colour-accurate screen, or work unplugged all day

Alternatives worth comparing

MSI Thin 15 B13UDX: the same chassis and Core i5-13420H, but MSI India lists it with a 6GB version of the RTX 3050, which helps in games that need more than 4GB of video memory.

What to check before you order

MSI Thin 15 buying checklist
What to check before you buy the MSI Thin 15.
  • Confirm the processor in the listing title and specifications, because both configurations look identical in photos
  • Check whether Microsoft Office is included, as MSI sells some Thin 15 SKUs with Office and others without
  • MSI India lists a 2-year limited warranty, so confirm the terms on the listing and register the laptop with MSI
  • Make sure the 120W adapter is in the box and the seller is authorised
  • If you plan to add a 2.5-inch drive, check whether a bracket and cable are supplied, as MSI’s page does not say

Final verdict

The MSI Thin 15 with the RTX 3050 is a practical first gaming laptop, offering a 144Hz screen, dual-channel 16GB memory, generous ports and an empty storage bay in exchange for compromises in display colour, battery life and GPU power. Choose the 13th Gen model when prices are close and the 12th Gen model to save money: check the current price of the MSI Thin 15 (Core i5-13420H) on Amazon.in or check the current price of the MSI Thin 15 (Core i5-12450H) on Amazon.in.
