The Sony Alpha ILCE-6100X is the Sony a6100 mirrorless camera sold in India as a twin-lens kit: the 24.2-megapixel APS-C body, the newer E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II power zoom (model code SELP16502) and the E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS telephoto zoom (SEL55210). It is a good fit for families, travellers and first-time camera buyers who want fast, eye-tracking autofocus and a real telephoto reach, but it is an older design, so serious video shooters should look elsewhere.

The body is the same a6100 that has been on sale for years. What changed from the earlier ILCE-6100Y bundle is the standard zoom, now the Mark II version. The 55-210mm lens is unchanged.

This article is based on Sony India’s official specification pages, the Amazon.in listing data and published reviews. We have not tested the camera hands-on. Specifications were checked on 17 October 2026.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: family events, travel, kids and pets, school functions and anyone moving up from a phone who wants a long zoom lens in the box
  • Skip if: you mainly shoot video, need in-body stabilisation, or want a fully flip-out screen for vlogging
  • Key strengths: 425-point hybrid autofocus with Real-time Eye AF, 11 fps bursts, built-in viewfinder and flash, two lenses covering 24-315mm equivalent
  • Key limitations: no in-body stabilisation, 4K limited to 30p, modest 1.44M-dot viewfinder, Micro USB port, 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi, no headphone jack

What exactly is in the ILCE-6100X box

According to Sony India’s specification page for the ILCE-6100X, the kit includes the camera body, the SELP16502 and SEL55210 lenses, an NP-FW50 rechargeable battery, an AC-UUE12 AC adaptor with power cord, a shoulder strap, an eyepiece cup, a micro USB cable, lens caps and a lens hood. A memory card is not listed, so budget for an SD card.

The Amazon.in listing describes the product as “Sony New Alpha ILCE-6100X (Previously ILCE-6100Y) with Upgraded SELP1650 (Ver 2) Power Zoom Lens + SEL55210 Lens” in Black. Sony itself refers to the new standard lens as the E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II (SELP16502). Both names describe the same lens. TechStoriesIndia, reporting the bundle’s India arrival in 2025, also notes that only the 16-50mm lens is new.

The two lenses, and why a twin-lens kit matters

On an APS-C sensor, focal lengths multiply by about 1.5 for a full-frame equivalent. Sony India lists:

  • E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II: 24-75mm equivalent, Optical SteadyShot, powered zoom, 0.25 m minimum focus at the wide end, 40.5mm filter thread, about 107 g
  • E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS: 82.5-315mm equivalent, Optical SteadyShot, 1 m minimum focus, 49mm filter thread, about 345 g

In practice, the 16-50mm handles rooms, group photos, food and landscapes. The 55-210mm covers what a phone struggles with: a child on stage, birds in a park or wildlife from a safari jeep. At Indian family events, where you often cannot walk up to the stage, that reach is the main reason to choose this kit.

The limitation is light. Both lenses have fairly narrow maximum apertures (f/3.5-5.6 and f/4.5-6.3). In dim halls, expect higher ISO. In its review of the a6100, DPReview criticised the image quality of the kit zoom it tested, which was the original 16-50mm. We have not found an independent review of the Mark II lens to confirm whether it improves on that.

Autofocus is the main reason to buy it

Sony India lists 425 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection points, object tracking, and Eye AF for humans (with left or right eye selection) and animals. TechStoriesIndia, quoting Sony’s figures, adds that the phase-detection points cover about 84 percent of the frame.

DPReview’s review of the a6100 was strongly positive here, calling it “the best AF system we’ve ever used for focusing on people” and noting that it keeps tracking a subject even when they turn away. The same review also points out a catch: tracking is not switched on by default. You need to set the focus mode to AF-C and choose a tracking focus area to get the best results.

Image quality and burst shooting

The 24.2MP APS-C sensor produces 6000 x 4000-pixel photos and supports 14-bit RAW files, according to Sony. DPReview reported much better JPEG colour than the older a6000 and “excellent detail retention”.

Burst shooting reaches up to 11 fps at the Hi+ setting, with 8, 6 and 3 fps options. That helps catch the exact moment a bat meets the ball.

Video: fine for family clips, limited for creators

The a6100 records 4K at 24p, 25p and 30p in the XAVC S format at up to 100 Mbps, and Full HD at up to 120p (NTSC) for slow motion, per Sony India. It has a 3.5mm microphone input, so you can add a better mic.

However, the video side shows its age. DPReview noted a “fairly prominent” jello (rolling shutter) effect in 4K, a crop in the 4K 30p mode, and that the body gets hot during 4K recording, which rules it out for long continuous recordings such as full school performances. There is no headphone jack to monitor audio, and no in-body stabilisation, so handheld walking shots rely on the lens stabiliser.

Screen, viewfinder and handling

The 3-inch touchscreen tilts up by about 180 degrees so you can see yourself for selfies or table-top vlogs, and down by about 74 degrees for overhead shots.

Unlike many entry-level mirrorless cameras, the a6100 includes an electronic viewfinder. Its 1.44M-dot resolution is modest (DPReview called it “relatively modest”), but any viewfinder is a big help in bright Indian sunlight, when a rear screen can be hard to see. There is also a built-in pop-up flash, which Sony rates at guide number 6.

DPReview found the grip comfortable but said the rear dial and record button are awkward to reach, and rated the menus “among our least favorite” in the class.

Battery and charging

The NP-FW50 battery is rated by Sony at about 420 shots per charge using the LCD and about 380 using the viewfinder (CIPA standard). DPReview noted that real-world numbers are often better than the rating. The camera can charge over USB, but the port is the older Micro USB type, not USB-C.

A note on the Amazon listing details

Some technical fields on the Amazon.in listing do not match Sony’s official spec page. The listing shows image stabilisation as “Digital”, aspect ratio as 4:3 and flash type as “no flash”. Sony India lists lens-based stabilisation only, a 3:2 sensor and a built-in flash. Rely on Sony’s figures.

Who should buy the Sony ILCE-6100X

Who should buy the Sony Alpha
Who the Sony Alpha suits, summarised from this review.
  • First-time camera buyers who want photos clearly better than a phone, especially of moving people
  • Parents who need a long zoom for school events and sports days
  • Travellers who want one bag covering wide scenes and distant subjects
  • Pet and casual wildlife photographers

Who should skip it

  • YouTubers and vloggers who need 4K 60p, 10-bit video, a fully flip-out screen or a headphone jack
  • People who shoot long continuous 4K recordings, given the heat warnings reported by DPReview
  • Low-light shooters who will not buy an extra bright lens
  • Anyone who needs weather sealing or in-body stabilisation

Alternatives worth comparing

Sony ZV-E10 II

A newer Sony APS-C body aimed at creators. Sony India lists a 26MP sensor, 4K up to 60p with 10-bit 4:2:2, a vari-angle screen, a headphone jack, USB-C and the larger NP-FZ100 battery (about 610 shots CIPA). It has no viewfinder and Sony lists only an electronic shutter, so the a6100 suits stills better.

Sony Alpha a6400 (ILCE-6400)

Shares the same 24.2MP APS-C sensor resolution, 425-point AF and 11 fps burst according to Sony India, but has a sharper 2.36M-dot viewfinder. It also lacks in-body stabilisation.

Canon EOS R50

Canon India lists a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, DIGIC X processor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with eye detection, 4K 30p oversampled from 6K, a fully articulating touchscreen and a 2.36M-dot viewfinder. It also has no in-body stabilisation. See our Canon EOS R50 review.

What to check before you order

Sony Alpha buying checklist
What to check before you buy the Sony Alpha.
  • Confirm the variant: the link in this article is for the ILCE-6100X twin-lens kit in Black (body + SELP16502 + SEL55210). Body-only and single-lens kits are different listings, so check the title before you add to cart.
  • Lens version: the listing says the 16-50mm is the upgraded Ver 2 (SELP16502). Check the lens model printed on the lens or box when it arrives.
  • Warranty: the Amazon.in listing mentions a “2+1 Year Extended warranty on registration on Alpha Community”. Confirm current terms with Sony India and register promptly. Keep the invoice.
  • Add-ons: an SD card, a spare NP-FW50 battery and 40.5mm and 49mm protective filters.
  • Compatibility: the camera uses Sony E-mount, so Sony E and FE lenses fit directly. Older A-mount lenses need an adaptor such as the LA-EA4.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Sony ILCE-6100X and ILCE-6100Y?

Both are a6100 twin-lens kits. The ILCE-6100X replaces the original 16-50mm power zoom with the newer E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II (SELP16502). The camera body and the 55-210mm lens are the same, according to Sony’s spec page and TechStoriesIndia.

Does the Sony a6100 have in-body image stabilisation?

No. Sony India states that stabilisation is supported on the lens. Both kit lenses include Optical SteadyShot, which reduces handshake in photos and video.

Can the Sony ILCE-6100X shoot 4K video?

Yes, at 24p, 25p or 30p. DPReview reported noticeable rolling shutter in 4K, a crop at 30p and heat during long 4K takes, so it suits short clips better than long recordings.

Is the Sony a6100 good for beginners?

Yes, for photography. Its autofocus does much of the hard work, and the kit covers wide to long telephoto. DPReview called it one of the best family or travel cameras “once you know how to use it”, pointing to menus and AF setup as the learning curve.

Final thoughts

The Sony ILCE-6100X is a dependable stills kit with excellent people-focused autofocus, a viewfinder, a flash and a long telephoto lens. Its age shows in video, the Micro USB port and the lack of stabilisation in the body. If your priority is photos of family, travel and events, it remains a sensible choice. If video comes first, look at the ZV-E10 II instead.
