The Apple Watch SE 3 (GPS, 44mm, Midnight aluminium) is Apple’s lower-priced SE smartwatch, and it is a sensible first choice for iPhone owners who do not need ECG or blood-oxygen readings. It brings an Always-On Retina display, the S10 chip, Ion-X glass and sleep scoring to the SE line, with an official rating of up to 18 hours on a charge. You need an iPhone to use it, and several health features found on pricier models are missing.

This article is based on Apple India’s official Apple Watch SE 3 page, which we read on 29 October 2026, and on published reviews from TechRadar and Macworld. It is not based on hands-on testing, and the battery and charging observations quoted below belong to those reviewers. The Amazon.in link goes to a listing titled “Apple Watch SE 3 GPS 44mm Midnight Aluminium Case with Midnight Sport Band – S/M”, which is the GPS-only version in the larger size.

Quick verdict

  • Best for: first-time Apple Watch buyers and iPhone owners who want Apple’s core watch features without paying for a Series model
  • Skip if: you use Android, want ECG, blood oxygen or hypertension notifications, or want the brightest, most modern screen
  • Key strengths: Always-On display, S10 chip, Ion-X glass, fast charging, sleep score, double tap and wrist-flick gestures
  • Key limitations: 1,000-nit peak brightness, older flat-edge design with thicker bezels, 18-hour battery rating, only two case finishes

The variant you are looking at

The listing title names the 44mm GPS model with a Midnight aluminium case and a Midnight Sport Band in size S/M. That means no cellular connection of its own: it relies on your iPhone over Bluetooth, and a GPS + Cellular model plus a wireless plan would be needed for mobile data on the watch. Apple’s page says Emergency SOS needs cellular or Wi-Fi calling with internet, and that Apple Watch For Your Kids supports GPS + Cellular models, so this GPS version is not the one for a child’s watch set up through a parent’s phone.

The “S/M” in the title refers to the Sport Band size, not the case size. Sport Band sizing depends on your wrist circumference, so measure your wrist and check Apple’s band size guide before you order; this article cannot confirm the size ranges because we did not verify them on the Apple page. TechRadar also noted that Apple Watch Ultra 3 bands cannot be used on the SE 3.

Display and design

The big upgrade over older SE models is the Always-On Retina display. Apple says it shows the watch face, Live Activities, notifications and active apps such as Workout, then brightens when you raise your wrist. TechRadar called this a clear upgrade that removes a major reason to pay more for another model, and Macworld noted that the dimmed version of each face is less colourful but still shows key information.

There are real limits. The screen peaks at 1,000 nits, which TechRadar said makes it harder to read in direct sunlight, and it described the display as fairly reflective. It also noted the design is older, with thicker bezels and a flat edge, rather than the curved edges of newer models. Macworld added that the screen size matches the SE 2 and is smaller than current Series models. If you mostly use the watch indoors or in shade, this matters less than it will on a sunny outdoor run.

Durability is a selling point. Apple says the Ion-X glass is four times more crack resistant than on the SE 2. Macworld saw no scratches in two weeks but said it could not test Apple’s claim, so treat it as a manufacturer figure.

Performance and software

The SE 3 uses the S10 chip, the same chip TechRadar says is in the Series 11 and Ultra 3, and the reviewer found apps opened quickly and watchOS ran smoothly.

Gestures are a useful addition. Apple lists double tap to answer calls or send texts, a finger-and-thumb tap to select a Smart Stack widget, and a wrist flick to dismiss notifications. Macworld said wrist flick is available only on the SE 3 among SE models. Apple India also lists a Siri AI feature in beta that is English-only to start, with daily usage limits. The Apple page also says Workout Buddy and Live Translation need an Apple Intelligence iPhone, so check your phone model.

Battery and charging

Apple rates the SE 3 at up to 18 hours of normal use and up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode, with 8 hours of normal use after a 15-minute fast charge. Treat 18 hours as Apple’s rating, since reviewers reported more. TechRadar’s reviewer said the watch comfortably lasted a full day including sleep tracking, similar to the Series 10, so expect a daily charging routine. Macworld reported that the watch often reached bedtime with 50 to 70 percent left, lasted into the next afternoon and sometimes ran two days and nights.

On charging, TechRadar got about 30 percent in 15 minutes and a full charge from empty in closer to an hour. Macworld measured 48 minutes to reach 80 percent, near Apple’s claimed 45 minutes. Charging uses Apple’s Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable, so check the box contents and use a suitable USB-C power adapter.

Health, fitness and safety features

Apple lists a nightly sleep score, a Vitals app for overnight wellness data (heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature and sleep duration), heart rate notifications for high, low and irregular rhythm, cycle tracking and wrist temperature sensing. HRV is also listed. Apple labels the Vitals app and wrist temperature sensing as wellness features, not for medical use. For safety, Apple lists Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Check In and Medical ID.

The missing features are important. Apple’s page says the ECG app and Blood Oxygen app are not available on the SE 3, and TechRadar also lists hypertension notifications as missing. On sleep apnoea, sources disagree: Apple’s page lists sleep apnoea notifications and Macworld says the SE 3 adds them, but TechRadar’s review says they are absent. Check Apple’s current feature availability page before relying on this feature.

For fitness, you get activity rings, the Workout app and GPS. TechRadar said workout, sleep and heart-rate results in side-by-side tests with the Series 11 and Ultra 3 were similar, though that is one reviewer’s experience and not a clinical comparison.

Who should buy it

The SE 3 suits first-time Apple Watch users and iPhone owners who want notifications, fitness tracking, sleep scoring and safety features without paying for a flagship. Macworld gave it an Editors’ Choice and said it did not hesitate to recommend it. TechRadar called it the best Apple Watch for most people and scored value 5 out of 5, and pointed to the durable glass as a plus for kids, although a child’s watch managed by a parent needs a cellular model.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you use an Android phone, because it requires an iPhone. Also skip it if you want ECG, blood-oxygen readings or hypertension notifications, a brighter display for outdoor sport or a slimmer modern design. Runners and cyclists who need multi-day battery should not expect it from this watch.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Apple Watch Series 11: Macworld and TechRadar describe it as the pricier step up, with a bigger and brighter curved-edge screen, a 24-hour battery rating per Macworld, and more health features such as ECG, blood oxygen and hypertension notifications per TechRadar
  • Apple Watch Ultra 3: TechRadar says it uses the same S10 chip as the SE 3, and its bands do not fit the SE 3
  • Apple Watch SE 3 GPS + Cellular: the same watch with its own cellular, which needs a wireless plan, and which Macworld says carries 5G

Buying tips before you order

  • Check the model: look for Apple Watch SE 3, GPS, 44mm, Midnight aluminium case
  • Check the band size: the listing says S/M, so compare your wrist with Apple’s sizing guide
  • Check your iPhone: Apple India lists iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later
  • Check what is in the box: Apple’s page names a Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable for charging, so check the listing for whether a power adapter is included
  • Warranty: we did not verify warranty terms, so check the seller and the invoice
  • Straps: Apple lists Sport Band, Sport Loop, Braided Sport Loop, Solo Loop and other options, subject to availability
