The Insta360 X5 is a pocket 360-degree camera that records 8K 360° video at up to 30fps and 5.7K at up to 60fps, using two 1/1.28-inch sensors, a replaceable lens design and waterproofing to 15 m. It is worth buying if you want to film everything around you and choose your angles later, especially for travel, biking, snow and water sports. It is not the right tool if you just want simple, ready-to-post flat video with no editing step.

Compared with its predecessor, the X4, Insta360’s own specifications show a larger sensor (1/1.28-inch against 1/2-inch), a bigger 2400mAh battery and deeper waterproofing (15 m against 10 m), so the X5 is a meaningful upgrade rather than a minor refresh.

Note: this article is based on Insta360’s official X5 product and specification page and on the Amazon.in listing, both checked on 17 October 2026. It is not a hands-on review, and no independent test results are quoted, so claims about low light and battery life below are Insta360’s own.

Quick verdict

  • Buy it for: travel, biking, skiing, water sports and family moments where you want every angle and can reframe later
  • Skip it if: you dislike editing, need the sharpest possible single-angle video, or record mostly talking-head content
  • Main strengths (official): larger 1/1.28-inch sensors, 8K30 and 5.7K60 360° capture, replaceable lenses, 15 m waterproofing, Horizon Lock, fast charging
  • Main limitations: 360 footage needs software reframing, files are large, and the Invisible Selfie Stick is sold separately

How a 360 camera changes the way you shoot

A normal action camera records what the Insta360 X5 points at. The X5 records a full sphere from two back-to-back lenses, so the decision about where to point the camera moves from the moment of shooting to the editing stage. You can follow a friend on a trail, cut to your own face, then swing to the view ahead, all from a single clip. This is why 360 cameras are popular for motovlogging and cycling: nothing important is missed because the camera was facing the wrong way.

The catch is that 8K across a whole sphere is not the same as 8K in a flat frame. When you reframe a 16:9 view out of the sphere, you only use a slice of those pixels, so the final flat video is noticeably less detailed than the headline number suggests. That is true of every 360 camera, and it is why the larger sensor and higher resolution of the X5 matter: they give the reframed slice more to work with.

InstaFrame mode for quicker sharing

To reduce the editing burden, Insta360 lists InstaFrame 2.0, which saves a ready-to-share flat video (up to 4K at 30fps) alongside the 360 file. According to the Amazon.in listing, you can let the Insta360 X5 track you automatically or lock a fixed angle, then go back to the full 360 footage later if you need a different view.

The “invisible selfie stick” effect

Because the stick sits in the blind spot between the two lenses, software can stitch it out of the image, giving a third-person, drone-like look. The Amazon.in listing notes that the Invisible Selfie Stick is sold separately, so budget for one if this is the look you want.

Sensors and low light: what the larger chip means

Insta360 lists a 1/1.28-inch sensor behind each lens, against 1/2-inch on the X4. A larger sensor collects more light per frame, which typically means less noise in dim scenes such as evening streets, forests and indoor events. Insta360 also lists a PureVideo mode with AI noise reduction, a dynamic range figure of 13.5 stops and a triple-chip design (two imaging chips plus a 5nm AI chip, according to the spec comparison on its page).

These are manufacturer claims. Low-light quality depends heavily on how processing handles noise and detail, and this article does not cite independent tests, so read a couple of published reviews if night shooting is your main use.

Durability: replaceable lenses, waterproofing and wind

The two lenses on a 360 camera bulge out and are easy to scratch, and a deep scratch used to mean a repair. The X5 uses a replaceable lens design, which Insta360 lists as a key feature. That makes it more practical for rough use such as trail riding or rocky beaches.

The camera is waterproof to 15 m on its own and to 60 m with the optional Invisible Dive Case, and Insta360 rates it for -20°C to 40°C. For Indian summers, note that 40°C upper limit if you plan to leave it mounted in direct sun for long periods.

For audio, Insta360 describes a multi-layer wind guard with steel mesh, plus automatic wind-noise reduction, voice enhancement, stereo and 360° audio modes. Wind is the main enemy of action-camera sound, so this matters for bike and scooter footage, but no measured figures are given.

Stabilisation and Horizon Lock

FlowState stabilisation and 360° Horizon Lock keep footage smooth and level even if the camera rolls or flips, according to Insta360. Because the camera captures the whole sphere, it can correct rotation in any direction. Insta360 also lists virtual gimbal modes (Pitch Lock, Follow and FPV) for different looks.

Battery, charging and storage

The X5 uses a 2400mAh battery. Insta360’s lab figures are 93 minutes at 8K30, 135 minutes at 5.7K30 and 208 minutes at 5.7K24 in Endurance mode. The Amazon.in title says “3-Hour Battery” and its technical details list 185 minutes; that kind of figure only applies to lower-power settings, so plan around the official per-mode numbers. Charging to 80% takes 20 minutes and to 100% takes 35 minutes with a 9V 3A charger, per Insta360.

Insta360 specifies microSD cards rated UHS-I V30 or faster. Note that the Amazon.in technical details list “internal flash memory”, which conflicts with the official page, so assume you need a microSD card and check whether one is in the box. With bitrates up to 180Mbps, 8K files fill cards quickly, so a fast, reliable backup drive helps; our SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD review covers one option for offloading footage on trips.

Who should buy the Insta360 X5, and who should not

Who should buy the Insta360 X5
Who the Insta360 X5 suits, summarised from this review.

Good fit: riders and cyclists who want both their face and the road in one clip, travellers who want immersive memories, snow and water-sports users, and creators who enjoy the reframing process.

Poor fit: people who want to press record and upload straight away without any editing, anyone whose main output is sit-down talking videos (a single-lens camera or phone is simpler), and users with an older phone or laptop that may struggle with large 8K files.

Alternatives worth comparing

Insta360 X4: the previous model, with the same 8K30 and 5.7K60 360° modes, a 1/2-inch sensor, 2290mAh battery, 2.5-inch touchscreen and 10 m waterproofing, per Insta360. Worth considering if you can live without the bigger sensor and replaceable lenses.

GoPro HERO12 Black: a single-lens action camera with 5.3K60 video, 27MP photos, front and rear screens and 10 m waterproofing, according to Tom’s Guide’s review. Better if you want flat video straight out of the camera.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro: a single-lens camera with a 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K at up to 120fps, two screens, 64GB of built-in storage and 20 m waterproofing, per DJI’s specifications.

Final thoughts

The Insta360 X5 is a strong choice if you want to capture everything around you and decide on framing later. Its larger sensors, replaceable lenses and 15 m waterproofing address real weaknesses of older 360 cameras, according to Insta360’s specifications. The trade-off is time: 360 footage rewards people who enjoy editing. If that is you, it is well worth a look.
