Laptops with Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors are now common on Indian shelves, usually sold as thin, light Copilot+ PCs with long battery life claims. They run Windows 11, but on an Arm processor instead of the Intel or AMD x86 chips most Windows software was written for. For many people that difference is invisible; for others it decides whether a key app, printer or game works at all. This explainer covers how app compatibility really works, what emulation can and cannot do, and how to check before you buy.

Quick answer

  • Snapdragon X laptops run full Windows 11, not a cut-down edition, and can run most everyday apps.
  • Apps built for Arm64 run natively with the best speed and battery life; most other x86 and x64 apps run through Microsoft’s Prism emulator.
  • Emulation cannot run drivers. Hardware, VPN or security software that needs its own driver must have an Arm64 version.
  • Printers are the most common snag: x64-only printer drivers will not work, though many network printers can use Windows’ built-in IPP driver.
  • Gaming has improved, and Easy Anti-Cheat now supports Windows on Snapdragon, but each game must adopt it, so multiplayer titles still need individual checks.
  • Battery life claims come from specific vendor tests; real results depend heavily on whether your apps are native.

What “Windows on Arm” actually means

Arm is a processor architecture widely used in phones and tablets. Windows 11 has an Arm64 edition, and Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC programme brought a wave of laptops built on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips, which Microsoft lists with a 45 TOPS NPU (neural processing unit) for on-device AI features.

The next generation is already announced. On 24 September 2025, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme, built on its third-generation Oryon CPU with an 80 TOPS NPU, with PCs expected from the first half of 2026. Availability and pricing in India vary by brand, so check local listings for specific models.

From the user’s side, the desktop, Settings, File Explorer and Microsoft Store look the same as on any Windows 11 laptop. The difference lies in how software runs underneath.

How apps run: native, emulated or not at all

Native Arm64 apps

Apps compiled for Arm64 run directly on the processor. Microsoft says this gives the best performance and battery life, and the Microsoft Store installs the Arm64 version automatically when a developer provides one. Major apps have been moving across; Google, for example, released a native Arm64 build of Chrome for Windows in March 2024. Whether a specific app you rely on is native is something you should check rather than assume.

Emulated apps through Prism

For apps built only for x86 or x64, Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism, an emulator that translates x86 instructions into Arm64 instructions on the fly and caches the result so later launches are quicker. Windows 11 on Arm supports both 32-bit x86 and 64-bit x64 apps this way. Emulated apps work without changes, but Microsoft notes they run slower than native ones.

Prism has also become more capable. In December 2025, Microsoft extended support for AVX and AVX2 instructions (plus related extensions such as BMI, FMA and F16C) to all Windows on Arm devices running Windows 11 24H2 or later. These instructions are used by some creative tools and games that previously refused to start. The feature is on by default for 64-bit apps and off by default for 32-bit apps, which can be opted in through compatibility settings.

What emulation cannot do

This is the most important limitation. Microsoft states that emulation supports only user-mode code and does not support drivers; kernel-mode components must be compiled for Arm64. In practice, any software that installs its own driver needs a genuine Arm64 version. That can include some VPN clients, security tools, hardware utilities, kernel-level anti-cheat, and the drivers for older printers, scanners and other peripherals.

For Indian users, think about specialised hardware too. If you sign GST, MCA or income tax filings with a USB digital signature certificate token, check that the token maker offers an Arm64 driver before switching laptops. The same applies to biometric devices, barcode scanners and similar office peripherals.

Drivers, printers and peripherals

Devices that rely on drivers built into Windows generally have the best chance of working. Devices that need a manufacturer-supplied driver depend on that manufacturer providing an Arm64 version.

Printers deserve special attention. PaperCut, a print-management company, explains that traditional printer drivers were built for x86 or x64, and emulation does not extend to them, so an x64-only driver will not install on an Arm laptop. Microsoft’s long-term answer is driverless printing using IPP and its built-in Microsoft IPP Class Driver. Many network printers that support IPP or Mopria can be added through Settings without a vendor driver, although advanced features such as tray selection, stapling or secure release may not all be available.

Support from printer makers is growing. In a 2026 Windows IT Pro blog post, Microsoft listed partner solutions with Arm support, including the HP Universal Print Driver, Xerox Global Print Driver and several print-management platforms. Even so, if your office runs an older USB printer, check the manufacturer’s website for an Arm64 driver before you buy.

Gaming and anti-cheat

Most PC games are built for x64, so on a Snapdragon laptop they run through emulation on Qualcomm’s Adreno integrated graphics. Qualcomm has added a control panel for per-game settings and Adreno driver updates, but compatibility and performance still vary title by title.

Anti-cheat has been the bigger barrier, because kernel-level anti-cheat software runs as a driver and cannot be emulated. Epic Games added Windows on Snapdragon support to Easy Anti-Cheat in August 2025, and Fortnite became available on these laptops in November 2025. However, Epic notes that game developers must update to a newer Epic Online Services SDK to bring that compatibility to their own games, so support arrives game by game. Reports of Qualcomm’s late-2025 gaming update said it was also working with other anti-cheat vendors. Before buying for multiplayer gaming, check the game’s official support pages or the community database at worksonwoa.com, which Microsoft’s own documentation points to.

Battery life claims: how to read them

Arm processors have a reputation for efficiency, and Microsoft says native Arm64 apps give the best battery life. Manufacturer battery figures, however, are measured with specific tests, often video playback or web browsing at a set brightness. Your results will depend on screen brightness, video calls, background apps and especially on how many of your apps run under emulation, which uses extra processing. Compare laptops using independent reviews that run the same workload on each machine, rather than comparing headline hours from different brands.

Is a Snapdragon X laptop right for you?

A good fit if you

  • Mostly use a browser, office apps, video calls and streaming.
  • Value light weight and long unplugged use for college, travel or hybrid work.
  • Have confirmed that your essential apps run natively or work under emulation.
  • Print to a network printer that supports IPP or Mopria, or have an Arm64 driver.

Think twice if you

  • Depend on specialised software with its own drivers, plugins or USB licence dongles.
  • Use a USB signature token, biometric device or older printer without Arm64 drivers.
  • Play competitive multiplayer games that use anti-cheat not yet updated for Arm.
  • Must install a VPN or security client mandated by your employer that lacks an Arm64 version.

How to check before you buy

Architecture is only one part of the decision; for RAM, storage, display and other specs, see our laptop buying guide. For Arm specifically, run through these checks:

  • List every app you use weekly and check whether each has an Arm64 version or a confirmed emulation report.
  • Check worksonwoa.com and the developer’s support pages for apps and games.
  • Visit your printer and peripheral makers’ websites for Arm64 drivers, or confirm IPP or Mopria support.
  • Ask your IT team about VPN, device-management and security software compatibility.
  • Confirm the laptop’s return policy so you can test your own workflow in the first days.
  • Read independent battery tests rather than relying on box claims.

Frequently asked questions

Can Snapdragon X laptops run normal Windows apps?

Yes, most of them. Arm64 apps run natively, and most x86 and x64 apps run through Prism emulation. The main exceptions are apps that need their own drivers.

Will my printer work with a Windows on Arm laptop?

It depends. Network printers that support IPP or Mopria often work with Windows’ built-in driver. Printers that need a manufacturer driver will only work if an Arm64 version exists.

Can I play online games on Snapdragon laptops?

Some, yes. Easy Anti-Cheat now supports Windows on Snapdragon, and Fortnite runs on these laptops, but each game must adopt the update. Check each title individually.

Is battery life really better?

Real-world battery life varies with your workload and how many apps are emulated. Independent reviews are the best guide.
